I'd love to but they're a little expensive.  I have to build this over the internet.

Start with the small ones and work your way up. I don't mean get right into SDCC or NYCC. Those are huge and will cost a lot of money even for a small table. The plus side is you get exposure to a lot more people and even sell a good amount while you're there.

I am not a specialist in this field, but if I had to guess I would say that it is for the second reason that you name, I think that many horror fans don't participate in forums as maybe in another era used to do. I have participated in forums for many years now, and even at that time you could notice how little by little we were less and less, unfortunately facebook and all the rest of those social media have taken over almost everything, and many people prefer to remain on that platform. Few seem to want to venture beyond what they know. A real pity.

It's a shame, I can't stand anything about Facebook or Zuckerberg.  I've been thinking about joining minds.com instead.

Understood.

If it helps, I've seen people use a kickstarter or gofundme to get there. Find out how much you need plus traveling expenses and set a goal. The worst that could happen is you don't meet that goal and you try another time. You have nothing to lose.

I made my promo reel for Kickstarter, than put it out to see what the response would be.  There wasn't much of one.  I've got a lot of audience building to do before I can make Kickstarter work.  I've been putting more work into my Patreon lately to see if I can build that up, and I'll use it as a yardstick to measure when I'm ready for Kickstarter.

Sure, ATM I'm posting as many rewards as I can to my Patreon (patreon.com/xtin).  I think it will be a while before I try Kickstarter.  It looks bad when those fail.  Hopefully I'll get some time to play with Blender again soon and can post something else here.  It's amazing how Blender is progressing.

I know your last perk offers a .pdf copy of XTIN: The Dragon's Dreamworld, but would you ever consider making a physical copy of it someday?

I know your last perk offers a .pdf copy of XTIN: The Dragon's Dreamworld, but would you ever consider making a physical copy of it someday?

I once asked my readers how many wanted a print book, and the answer was 15.  I would estimate that, at the time, my audience was twice the size it is now.  I hope there's a point in the future where it gets printed, but the audience has to grow first.  It's likely going to be a major PITA to get XTIN printed, as most services only want to work with family friendly material.  I consider myself lucky to be able to distribute the .pdf.  It may be that Patreon discovers XTIN:TDDW one day and freaks out.  I don't think I'm violating their terms of service, but you never know.  PayPal froze my account for a few days.  They reviewed and unfroze it fairly quick, but I think the story got more extreme after that.

I've been thinking of making a short animation that would be corridors and machines from XTIN:TDDW, set to this - Link.  I've been doing some tests with Blender lately, in the past it had an add-on that could procedurally generate stuff like this -

Unfortunately newer versions of the add-on are less functional than the old version, and can't do this at all.  Hopefully I can get the problem resolved soon and get a test shot up.  I think I can get a pretty decent result.  It seems like there's more enthusiasm for independent films than for comics, so maybe somehow by small steps I can work in that direction.  I can get a lot of effect out of sets and mechanisms.  I'm not a big fan of CG actors though.  It's O.K. for creatures sometimes, but not people.

Naturally people would gravitate more towards a film than reading, and if you ever get the time or the means to turn your comics into animated movies with the same art I would definitely be just as interested as a physical copy of the comic, but I understand its all about the demand for the product and it would be better to find a greater audience before you take any more steps to distribute it.

Just know that I fully support it and I think you are very talented.

Naturally people would gravitate more towards a film than reading,

That's what I thought, but it's the other way around.  My last REINCARRION page has 157 views on Deviant Art alone, and it's only been up for a week or so.  My 2nd promo trailer has been up for a month and only has 66 views, although I've pushed it on multiple sites (including DA).  This thread has nearly 3000 views, but, on a site dedicated to horror films only a handful of people clicked play.

I still think a series of short films are the next steps forward.  What I'm envisioning first is a minute or so of environment shots.  It worked well in the Scorn trailer -

The question is, if I tried crowdfunding it, would anyone support it, what site should I use, what kind of rewards would you be interested in?

I'm sure people on this site would help if they're interested. I would be.
A recent indiegogo project I (and a couple people from here) contributed to also had a sharing contest. Whoever shared the most, spread the word, got a special bonus perk or something of the like. I think that would help a lot to get your work to reach more audiences. But then again, I obviously can't say there's going to be a guarantee of supporters. You should move along at your own pace, and when you think you have enough of a following then start to expand!

The sharing contest is a good idea.  I'm not good at social media myself.  How do you measure the sharing to determine who wins?

I feel like I'm doing better here than on most sites.  Or at least that there are more people here who support small indie films.  I think it would be a good idea to make the push even if my overall audience isn't that big yet.  I won't be doing anything with live actors for a while, but I've got to be fairly unique insofar as I'm doing cosmic horror and I can do sets that aren't the everyday Earth locale.

I've been getting more work than usual lately, but I'm going to move forward with this.  A couple days ago I solved a problem I had getting the current version of Blender to generate the kind of greebles it could do ten years ago.  I found out that they'd dropped a bunch of features, so I got the old version working on an old tablet PC again.  Behold -

With that problem behind me, I can work on developing the textures.

I'll keep this thread updated and maybe by the time I get through the R&D phase I'll have enough supporters to git'r'done.

I have no idea how to measure the sharing, maybe you can ask woodenheart or splat because I know they were some of the winners to the sharing contest.
